David, What you wrote struck a chord with me. Loss is a biggie with RA. Loss of identity was something I had to face when I could no longer do what had always defined me. I was a musician –a folk singer and instrumentalist–making my living with performing and teaching. I had been hit with RA when I was 23, but managed to find instruments I could handle and hand surgeries to keep going till I was 68. You’d think that would have been enough, but it wasn’t. My voice was as strong as ever, but, even though I didn’t need to earn a living anymore, who would I be without my music? It took a long time of grieving when my hands and voice gave up the ghost, but now, ten years later, I have transferred my passions to photography and writing, and I sing a couple of guest gigs a year–softly– with my family.
I hope you can find things that bring you joy but don’t hurt your joints.

    Hi

I’m saddened to hear your stories but also inspired by the courage, determination & achievements.

After having a blood test the doctor has told me that I’m borderline RA – that I have autoimmune thyroid disease.

I know I have low thyroid & am taking med for it & thyroid results are normal.

The only pain I get is my wrist sometimes hurts & I can feel my bones crackling.

    What is this?

Sarah, that’s a common symptom with RA. If possible, try to get an ultrasound of your wrists. When done by an expert, they can answer that question about what’s going on inside there. If you do have RA, it’s important to be treated early to try to help prevent it spreading to more joints.

Did you ever determine why the onset occurred just after the colonoscopy. I ask because I had a colonoscopy in late March and began having arthritis like symptoms shortly thereafter (joint swelling, aching joints all over, etc.)

    Thanks,

    J
